 Epilepsy has been found to affect at least 7 out of every 1000 individuals in rural South Africa according to an Agincourt study published by Ryan Wagner and colleagues in Epilepsy Research. The research, led by Professor Charles Newton of the Department of Psychiatry, Oxford University and funded by the Wellcome Trust, highlights the fact that epilepsy, one of the most common neurological disorders globally, is less common in rural South Africa than other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. This research raises a potential connection between epilepsy and snoring and provides evidence that improving obstetric services could prevent epilepsy in this context.
