Screening for hypertension among the elderly in the social grants queues

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a serious health condition that one can have without any noticeable symptoms. Know Your Numbers is a pilot study by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and the MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit that is screening for hypertension among the elderly as they queue to collect their pensions. The study has been running at 6 pension collection points in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province since April 2021 and is picking up high rates (60%) of hypertension among study participants. People who are screened are directed to health care facilities for treatment and care. Find out more about Know Your Numbers in this article in GroundUp.
