• Agincourt Data Scientists won Big Data Prize

    Louise Corti (Director), Sulaimon Afolabi, Daniel Ohene-Kwofie, Mamello Nchake and Sibanisezwe Khumalo

    Agincourt Data scientists, Sulaimon Afolabi, Danie Ohene-Kwofie and Mamello Nchake  (National University of Lesotho), and Sibanisezwe Khumalo (Fort Hare University)  comprise a  team named SYNERGY that  received an award for the best team that could implement a project incorporating the big data technology stack: Hadoop, Hive, SparkR, R, ggplot2 and Leaflet at the maiden edition of the Encounters with Big Data workshop: An introduction to using big data in the social sciences organised by the UK Data Service in conjunction with  Data First in Cape Town.

    The event took place between 30th January and  3rd February 2017 at Bytes People Solution, Oceania House, Cape Town.  The one week programme was attended by demographers, statisticians, researchers, data scientists, students lecturers, data scientist, managers and analysts.

    The workshop provided hand-on sessions on key big data systems such Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Amabari and HortonWorks platform. It also provides an avenue for the participant to perform quantitative analysis on a large scale.
